Bacterial stains are used to identify Lemierre's syndrome. Gram-positive bacteria retain the violet stain, and gram-negative bacteria do not and so cannot be seen on the slide. A secondary red stain is then used to identify gram-negative bacteria, which is present in Lemierre's.
